It still has a lot of the same closed city maps though, so it’s not a game-changer.Īttack on Titan: Humanity in Chains often can’t shake the limitations of the 3DS platform, but it captures most of what makes the anime’s world so captivating. My favorite aspect of World Mode is access to more open plain levels, where you can’t rely on fluttering about on invisible buildings, and have to rely on horseback riding and pinpoint Titan attacks. You’ll have to repeat a lot of missions to grind up more currency, but if you’re so inclined you can also start up online sessions (which were smooth, in my experience) to mix things up a bit, and hire “mercenaries” by way of StreetPassing friends. It’s a lot more involved than I thought, forcing you to scale up your base of operations, purchase supplies, pay to recruit soldiers, and embark upon missions much tougher than the story. Here you’ll access the sole multiplayer component of Humanity in Chains (both offline and online with matchmaking), as well as an RPG-heavy system that allows you to create a character, level him up, and recruit new members into your party. I’d actually claim that it looks more badass than the anime does on a consistent basis.Īfter a couple of hours into the roughly 10-hour campaign you’ll unlock “World Mode,” the real meat of the game. Still, it does accurately capture the feeling of the show, and when Titans are aggressive, it’s an odd balancing act that works. Part of the reason the Titans aren’t all that compelling to fight is that the AI is fairly easy to counter, and a lot of foes are kind of just “there,” wandering around. The action is all very cool looking and fun to play, if a bit muted by enemies who practice similar mechanics, and déjà vu environments (with plenty of retreading and re-used maps). I wouldn’t recommend playing with 3D on, as it slows the frame rate down to a crawl, even on the New 3DS, which is a massive disappointment. The Circle Pad Pro or New 3DS nub can be used as a camera if you have either one. It’s cinematic, with a zoomed-in camera to boot, but it’s also functional and easy to use - and it’s ever so satisfying to cut off an arm or a leg even if you don’t get a killing blow. Most of your attacks will be swooping in to engage Titans (and their weak spots at the nape of their neck) with a timed QTE of sorts. Y allows you to aim your hooks (you can even do it in the air), and players will be doing most of their combat in the air, which makes for a fairly action-packed experienced - if you want, you can beat some missions without ever touching the ground. You can use the R trigger to “Spider-Man swing” around cities at will, which is a blast. In other words, there’s enough room to move about and locate boxes to slash, but they’re not packed with secrets or anything.Īmazingly, Humanity in Chains‘ gameplay emulates the feeling of zipping about in the show. Battles take place in an arena-like format, kind of like a baby God Hand, but not nearly as open or interesting. It’s a recap of sorts of the show, but with a lot of filler cut for time, which is definitely a good thing. The actual cutscenes are not new information or footage, as they are ripped directly from the anime, and the dialog is only in Japanese. Thankfully it picks up after Eren, the main super shonen hero has been trained, and it doesn’t waste much time with the Battle of Trost happening in mere minutes. It re-explains the gist of the anime, where humans are under constant threat from mysterious Titans, and have subsequently sealed themselves into cities with giant walls. Just like the TV show, you’ll embark upon a campaign that takes place across multiple points of view - Eren, Mikasa, Armin, Levi, and Sasha. While the game follows the same low-key narrative, it really does manage to make you feel like you’ve just strapped on a piece of Three-Dimensional Maneuvering Gear, ready to take on the world.Īttack on Titan: Humanity in Chains (3DS) The few and far between action sequences are great, but I only truly liked the first OVA episode ( Ilse’s Notebook), which is the only bit of the show that gave us anything remotely interesting lore-wise. While the premise for Titan is intriguing, there’s an overabundance of filler (even more than your average series) and a lack of worthwhile characters outside of a select few - two key components that made it incredibly difficult for me to enjoy. As a fan myself it seemed right up my alley, and my weekly anime club ended up giving it a shot last year. If you even have one friend who enjoys anime, odds are you’ve heard of Attack on Titan.

The Caesar stuff on their site looks much better than the product you receive. It also makes their finishing work seem less daunting. You buy a few at a time, clean them, base them, paint them. The best way to build up a large mass of miniatures is to be patient and take your time. If I were to not care what my minis looked like, I would write "orc" on a square of cardstock. I bought a box of orcs and a box of goblins from they awhile ago and they were so poorly molded that I never did take the time to fully clean the flash off of all of them. Literally everything they sell can be bought from someone else but better in quality. If you want them for tabletop wargaming, they would work great.especially if you do not care for what your miniatures look like. I do not think the Caesar stuff is necessarily bad, but it still came down to me having wasted money on them. To most people it may not be important, but a lack of continuity messes with me sometimes. I do like Reaper Miniatures, I just made a decision to pick a scale and focus on it. There are more fantasy miniatures out there closer to the true scale 25mm than any other, they are however largely eclipsed by the far more obtainable Reaper selection. When in doubt as to who is in charge on the battlefield, listen to the man with the bloodiest sword. With Fields of Battle about out, I thought how cool it would be to have some adventures culminate in some crazy epic mass battles.ĭoes anyone else use this scale of minis? I think I am going to buy a box or three and check them out. Monster sizes are realative, so a lot of 28mm stuff I have will still work. I am just tired of not being able to afford to lay out the table the way I want because WOTC wants to bend me over. At that price, I may have to switch scales fellas. The historical line provides a variety of human elements, from crusading knights to jungle natives. Plus now they have a box of adventurers, with all the class archtypes presented, 15 miniatures plus 4 randoms, for that same 6.99. They have goblins, elves, and dwarves too, 35 to a box for the same price. A box of 35 orcs of various poses (nice sculpts too) on sale for 6.99 at. Then I stumbled across Caesar Miniatures foray into fantasy at 1/72. Or the affordable castle kits, seige accessories, forts, etc. In my newfound obsessive-compulsive hobby, I have looked at affordable miniatures, and discovered how cheap 1/72 scale (20-23MM) plastic miniatures are. Now I unloaded some cash on materials to make terrain and it's shaping up nicely. I have never been that much into miniatures until this year. PoE Trade is a lightning-fast, browser based PoE currency trading website which allows you to safely buy and sell Path of Exile Currency with real-time market updates. The key difference between these two types of currency is that scrolls will only affect one specific type of item, while orbs can potentially affect any item. Orbs can be used to modify the properties of another item, while scrolls can be used to add affixes to un-modified items. Orbs are the most valuable items in the game, while Scrolls are ordinary magic and rare items that have been transmuted into a different item. There are two types of currency in Path of Exile: Orbs and Scrolls. Players trade items with each other for currency, which can be used to acquire more powerful items. Trading in Path of Exile is built around a bartering system. Most quest rewards cannot be traded, but there is an exception: The Searing Touch unique wand can be traded because it never binds to your account. You can even trade skill gems and certain equipment if they are not bound to your account. You can also trade maps and divination cards, but these are far less common in trades. The types of items that can be traded are limited (for the most part) to currency and orbs, white (normal), blue (magic), yellow (rare) and unique items. Once your account is set up, you can start making trades by placing a listing for an item you want to sell and then linking it to a “buy” price. You can sign up for free at poe.trade/signup. To use poe.trade to purchase items, you’ll need an account with at least 10,000 karma (a sort of online reputation). As with any marketplace, there are ways to make money on poe.trade by placing low-priced “steal” listings, looking for other users who want an item you’re selling and buying it from them. Poe.trade is a social marketplace where users create listings of items they want to sell and buy, or items they want to find. The Path of Exile community is really active, and there are plenty of helpful guides and tutorials from other users. There are multiple filters that help narrow down search results and make finding the right items much easier.Since it’s used by a lot of people, it’s easier to find what you’re looking for in a short period of time. It allows players to find items much faster than they would normally be able to do so.There’s market analysis tools, currency exchange tools and so much more. It’s completely free, and offers more than just Path of Exile item trading. Here are the main reasons why PoE Trade is a great website to use: To filter items by modifiers, click on “Modifiers” and check off each modifier that you want to apply (for example Full Rare Set). One way to filter out unwanted items is by using modifiers (for example, Chaos Orb stacksize). Depending on what exactly you have searched for, you may need to filter through a lot of results until you find what you are looking for (this drastically depends on what exactly you are searching for). Once you have typed in your search query into the search bar, the results will appear on the screen. You can also find items by their base name by searching for “Boots”, but this may make it harder to find your desired item if there are more than one type of boots listed on poe.trade. For example, if you are looking for a pair of leather boots, type in “Leather Boots” into the search bar. The first thing you will want to do is type in the name of the item that you are looking for in the search bar at the top of the website. The system is straightforward and easy to use, but it may take a bit of time to get used to. You can also click the number under “Seller” to see all sellers for this item. If you click one of these characters, you’ll be taken to the item’s page on poe.trade where you can see all their available trades. The item’s minimum level requirement, if any, is also displayed.Ĭlicking the “Required Level” header will sort items by their minimum level requirement, while clicking the “Popularity” header sorts items by how many people have listed that item on poe.trade (this includes listings with no currency offered).Ĭlicking an item’s name will show you a list of characters who are selling that item (including character name, price and league). You can find the price of a particular item by searching for it. In an effort to squash all of Tartarus into one tiny PSP UMD, The Answer was removed and the 3D explorable overworld was replaced with a 2D point-and-click visual novel style. This version seemed more focused on simply adapting the game to the PSP. Persona 3 Portable was released in 2009 for the less powerful PSP handheld. It’s more or less the same game as the original but added a new epilogue chapter for the game called ‘The Answer’ which added a new dungeon, a new playable character, and a more thorough conclusion to the events of Persona 3. Persona 3 FES released in 2007 for the PS2. Soundtrack The original score for Obscure: the Aftermath was composed by Olivier Deriviere and it's available in its entirety at the composer's official website.Follow 3 however has two enhanced rereleases: Persona 3 FES and Persona 3 Portable. In cases like this, the whole game has to be played over again, unless the player has made several saves, which is possible. It can very well happen that the player will reach a part of the game, but will have his or her energy so low that it will be impossible to proceed. Additionally the game also forces the player to conserve health by making health packs or other healing potions very rare. The game heavily relies on sharing items, meaning that the inventory is collectively for both players, so items have to be distributed into both players quick inventory, in which items are assigned on a certain button. Menu, showing how collected items must be shared. That way, the player will be faced with a question such as "A famous painter from the 1800's?" and has to input the answer P-I-C-A-S-S-O (meaning, there is no multiple choice answers to choose from). Additionally, the game sometimes requires pre-existing knowledge, so that one of the characters can "hack" into security systems. This typically consists of exploring rooms for clues, solving puzzles, finding items, hacking and slashing through monsters and simply surviving. Therefore it is the players job to: investigate what happened, survive by fighting monsters, rescue friends, follow teachers instructions to effectively eliminate the plague. Pseudo Hacking The primary objective in the game is to first of live student life (reunite with people, go to parties, etc.) but suddenly monsters start appearing at these locations. The game features a multiplayer system in which player two can enter or leave the game at any point. That way, the players can experience different events at the same locations. Because of this, different episodes will be played with different pairs of people. Because the game can be played with two players or with an AI NPC character, there will always be two characters present in each scene who must interact to achieve the current objective. The game is not played in a linear matter, rather than a series of events which are repeated by a group of two different characters at a different point in time. The enemies in the game range from partially deformed humans, which seem to be in a zombified state, or extremely mutated fictional monsters, as well as mythical creatures such as harpies. These often include melee weapons, such as golf clubs or baseball bats but later on also firearms such as pistols or shotguns, as well as power tools such as chainsaws. To do this, the player has to use weapons that can be found on the ground. The player is suddenly placed into a horrifying situation and must fight inexplicably appearing monsters. Gameplay Characters wielding a Golf Club Obscure: The Aftermath, plays very similar to other survival games. But many of the students realize to late that once the plants germinate inside of their bodies, what used to be only a bad trip turns into reality. They find out that when the flower is ingested in some ways highly real trips are induced, but which often turn out to be nightmares. Students start making the flower into tea, or smoke it for a drugging effect. Most of them have tried to forget about the incident, but now strange black flowers are starting to appear on campus. In the meantime they have finished high school and moved on to college located in a nearby town called Fallcreek. A few of the students survived the incident and in the process killed their principal. The story so far is that two years ago a group of students were locked inside their high school (Leafmore High), while being hunted by monsters that were created by means of biological experiments by their principals Herbert Friedman. The game picks up two years after the first game left off. IntroductionObscure: The Aftermath is a sequel to the game Obscure. I also would have preferred more punching movements than arm movementsīalance Board Mode: Balance board mode is a new feature on DDR 3. I would have preferred Konami to do like Helix or We Cheer 2, and allow the use of two Wii remotes instead of the less responsive nunchuk. Even when you make exagerrated movements, the controls do not always register. You need to wave your arms to the side making a rainbow-shaped arc, and to wave your arms to the front as if you’re casting a fishing pole. Here, I was not thrilled with the way the remote and Nunchuk are implemented. Hypermove Mode: This is basically the same as Standard move, but also using the Wii remote and Nunchuks to move your arms. I find that the “difficult” setting provides me enough of a challenge while getting my heart pumping and my body sweating. Every song has four difficulty levels (beginning, basic, difficult and expert). Standard: This is “classic DDR”, where you move your feet to the music, and in my book it’s still the best way to work out. 30 minutes), or you can set it by the number of KCALS burned.Īs far as the types of workouts, you basically have three options: You’ll be able to set a goal for your workout sessions. A nice feature if you have others in the room. Pressing the “A” button will toggle between the asterisks and your weight. One nice touch is that after it takes your weight it doesn’t show it right away. When you start Workout mode, it’ll use the balance board to calculate your weight before you start working out. Kids in malls and homes everywhere were doing 30 minutes of rigorous and sustained aerobic exercise without even realizing it, while their parents with their Jane Fonda videos hardly broke a sweat.Ī lot of us had been using DDR for working out, but this version of DDR fully integrates exercise as a game feature, putting it right on par with other “exergames” like Wii Fit Plus and EA Sports Active. Long before Wii Fit or Wii Sports, there was Dance Dance Revolution. Konami invented exercise games before anyone knew what an exercise game was. The rest of this review will focus on how useful it is for exercise and fitness (i.e. I was a little disappointed that the songs and videos are abridged versions and that the soundtrack list was somewhat limited.īut enough about the game itself. I also liked that owners of Dance Dance Revolution 2 could unlock costumes and songs with their saved data. On a positive note, I appreciate the fresher track list with more recognizable music, and I like the fact that they use more actual videos from the actual stars. “Relaxed Mode” is for those who just want to play without any pressure. “Training Mode” will take you step-by-step through any song you choose so you can practice particularly complex moves. “Tournament Mode” lets you compete in a “DDR Tournament” with different challenges (you can play yourself or with 3 others, but there’s no online support). There are different modes to suit everyone from beginners to seasoned pros whose feet move faster than a hummingbird’s wings.”DDR School” provides an excellent tutorial for those getting started. The dance mat controller was the first and is still the best controller for accurate tracking of movements. It continues to have the “fun” features which makes DDR so fun to play alone or with friends and family. But ironically, this is the thing that may make it more effective than any “pure” exercise title. You can use the box at the bottom of this page to leave a comment.Dance Dance Revolution 3 for Wii, of course, is first a game and second an exercise title. If you’re watching along, you’ve heard the numerous jokes. Of course, the premise isn’t the only novel thing happening in the opening. For stories that have a high-novelty premise like this, focusing on the novel elements is a great way to suck in the audience immediately. Then in typical video blog style, he describes how he’s developing the laugh and how important a laugh is to a villain. Horrible, played by Neil Patrick Harris, laughs evilly at the camera and his followers. So by the time Act I opens, viewers have been promised a villain’s video blog, and the film immediately fulfills that promise. In this case, the camp also allows the film to have a small budget. That means stories are being played straight when they’d be better off with camp. I wish this was too obvious to be worth mentioning, but these days every studio is trying to produce the next grimdark hit. Accordingly, the tone of the film is campy. This way, viewers won’t spend the film’s opening sequence puzzling it out.Ī villain’s musical video blog will inevitably feel silly. Putting that whole premise in the title advertises this and sets expectations regarding the unusual format. That means the premise has a lot of novelty and, therefore, entertainment value. That means if you’re still getting a feel for abstract concepts like tension or karma, you now have an excuse to watch your favorite movie and call it homework. The principles we discuss at Mythcreants are actively at work in countless popular stories. This is part 1 in the series: A Breakdown of Dr. Here are a few reflections from my own journey during these dark days. We learn about the value of a resource or skill by experiencing the discomfort when it is not available and yet dearly needed. In light of this the Saturnalia, the period we are entering each year on the 17th of December is a wonderful opportunity to recall lessons on strength and power we learned through their absence. Thus to the powerful the Saturnalia were a painful lesson in what it truly meant to hold power – through the experience of its (temporary, ritually regulated) absence.Īnything we learn the hard way follows the same pattern: We learn of its value by precisely NOT achieving it. That means new skills or virtues are best trained through the experience of their extreme absence. The underlying pattern, however, remained intact and is deeply connected to the forces of Saturn: Learning in the magical realm always happens the hard way. The Saturnalia simply picked up on this pattern of magical learning – and ritualised it in a public social setting. It's here we come across an essential mechanism in which magical virtues, skills and powers are taught to humans. In which case the Saturnalia do not hold the promise of gaining anything, but rather the one of losing everything. – Taking possession of all things freely is great fun – unless they were yours already. Our modern day interpretation of Saturn (silence, restriction, limitation, death, withdrawal, essence, structure, meaning) comes to the foreground in these wild celebration when we aim to understand what the Saturnalia meant to people in positions of social power: Suddenly they lost their status as masters, their sole access to their villas, their private property, as well as all their privileges and powers. the temporary assumption of alternative identities formed an essential part in the status reversal during the festivities. Usual social identity was hidden behind masks and role-playing, i.e. Games otherwise prohibited or frowned upon such as gambling or dice-playing were permitted even to slaves and nuts were commonly used as stakes. Pottery or wax figurines were offered as common gifts – as their plain nature would not reveal social status but they were affordable to everyone. The most marked characteristic of the Saturnalia was a ritualised liberation and social inversion: Masters were made to serve lush banquets to their slaves, for the duration of the celebrations private property was made public and the ranks of all people were made equal. No ancient record gives a complete descriptions of these celebrations from beginning to end yet references to them are abundant and their influence continued long after their abandoning from the official calendar and all across the vast region of the Roman Empire. In the Roman Empire the Saturnalia were the seasonal celebrations from 17th to 22nd of December, preceding the 'Birthday of the Unconquerable Sun' ( Dies Natalis Solis Invicti) on 23rd of December. Dio reveals that Monika told him to protect them, and then proceeds to kiss Aya's forehead, saying, "Goodbye, Aya. When she awakens, Dio then explains that he must burn down the Mansion to prevent history from repeating itself. Aya then passes out from the shock of what just happened. Just then, Alfred attempts to kill them both, but is then killed by Dio, who stabbed him with a pitchfork. Believing him to be dead, Maria then confronts Aya and tells her that she had no choice. When Alfred attempts to kill her, he is stopped by Maria, who throws knives at him. Alfred will then catch up, kick Maria aside, and chase Aya into the Shrine. They will escape together, until Maria trips and tells Aya to escape without her. When Alfred betrays Maria, Aya must find the Bandages located on a bookshelf, and treat Maria's wounds. When Alfred reveals his intentions, Aya must run towards the Morgue, and hide among the corpses. Monika will fade, and Aya will see the same flashback from Bad Ending 2. Towards the end, when Monika appears, choose to Save Father. The player is to search her for her key, backtrack to the Archives, go to her room and read her diary. The canon ending of Mad Father, consisting of Aya paying attention to Maria. Alfred walks in, tells her that she is beautiful, and says goodnight to his precious doll. The next scene shows Aya wearing a red dress and sitting in the throne of the Doll Room. Aya ignores Maria, runs to the Shrine, trips over a doll and is soon caught by Alfred, who then proceeds to kill her. When Alfred finds out that she lost her, he then proceeds to wound Maria's leg with his chainsaw. She runs to a small mortuary, and hides among the corpses. Alfred then reveals how he believes in 'preserving the beauty and innocence of children' by turning them into dolls. In the next scene Aya wakes up near Alfred in the laboratory and is terrified. Maria, being loyal to the doctor, did not mention this to Aya. Alfred also killed Monika when she found out. In a frame after that, Aya goes through a flashback which shows how Alfred cheated on Monika, and was planning to make Aya a doll. Gem collection does not affect this ending.Īya's mother then fades away, upset by the decision Aya has taken. The player is to ignore Maria throughout and proceed through the game as usual. The second bad ending, consisting of Aya continuously ignoring Maria. The next frame shows Aya on an operating table, blood pooled under her, with Maria stating that she will continue to take on the doctor's work. The screen blacks out and a scream is heard. Aya is about to tell Maria she can stay with her when the assistant suddenly lunges at her. In the next slide, Aya and Maria are in the Shrine, paying their respects to her parents. Aya then proceeds South, and tells Maria, who seems to have not recovered from a shock. The ending scene shows Aya all alone in the room, since Monika has taken Alfred away. In the first bad ending, Aya has to Grant Mom's Wishand let her take Alfred with her at the end of the game, when the player has gone through the cursed Mansion. 2.1 Gem collection does not affect this ending. Final Fantasy VII is similar, another game that I consider one of my favourite of all time.įinal Fantasy X released here on May 24th, 2002, five months after the North American release and ten months after the original Japanese release (because LOL EUROPE). I would say FFX almost single-handedly influenced my tastes in games to come: a preference for those with a heavy focus on the story. Playing a Final Fantasy game at that age, games that dedicate a lot of time to world building, character arcs and epic plots, it’s no surprise it would stick with you. FFX released over here in May 2002, and I thoroughly played it well before the sequel’s release in February 2004, meaning I would’ve only been 12 or 13 at the time. That time, around the ages of 7-15, where a great experience will stick with you much longer than most things would during adulthood. It and most, if not all, of my other favourite games all share one thing in common: they were released, or I played them, during my formative years. The one thing that’s become abundantly clear to me over the past few years though, is that Final Fantasy X will always top that list. There are a handful of games that I consider to be my favourites of all time, but organising them all into an ordered top 10, top 5 or even a top 3 is something I’ll probably never be able to achieve. So why am I writing a blog post about this? Well, it’s rather simple: Final Fantasy X is my favourite video game. The screenshots show some fairly significant work on the textures, meaning Square are putting a little more effort into this than simply upressing the game to HD resolutions. The site has the first official screenshots as well as confirming the rumour that the sequel, Final Fantasy X-2 is also getting the HD treatment, and both will come on the same disk on the PS3, as “Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster”. That was, until very recently, where the publisher launched an official site over at the aptly titled. They announced that, and since then, we’ve had pretty much nothing in terms of details since. So, a little while ago, way back in 2011, Square Enix announced that they were going to be putting out an HD version of Final Fantasy X for the PlayStation 3 and Vita. |
